The Co-Responder program is an innovative partnership between police and mental health professionals. The program started in 2016 with three mental health professionals. It has grown to include 15 specialists. They cover six police districts in the Denver area and work at the Denver Downtown Detention Center. The goal is to make the program as effective as possible and to provide long-term community supports for individuals in need.
This partnership is a result of the increasing number of calls for help with mental health problems. A mental health professional rides along with a police officer and responds to mental health emergencies together. The program also utilizes a mobile crisis response team, which responds to mental health emergencies without a weapon or indication of violence.
The program helps responders provide assistance to individuals in crisis by linking them with community resources and helping them get to treatment. The program also helps decrease the number of 911 calls from people who need help. Co-responders are crucial for mental health services because they help bridge the gap between emergency resources and mental health professionals. They help citizens navigate the fragmented system of care by connecting them with appropriate services and preventing crisis situations from occurring.
In the last six years, the Co-Responder program has responded to more than ten thousand calls. The program has expanded its staffing over the years. It is now working to fill six overnight shift slots so that it can operate in a full-time capacity.
The Co-Responder program at mental heath center of Denver has helped more than 1,100 people with their mental health needs. The program is proving to be an efficient way to reduce police costs. It has saved Boulder County about $3 million a year.
